چکیده

A relatively simple, sensitive, selective, automatic fluorimetric method for the simultaneous determination of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) by flow injection analysis (FIA) was developed. The method is based on the selective oxidation of the non-fluorescing reagent 2-(a-pyridyl)thioquinaldinamide (PTQA), which with Cr yields an intensely fluorescent product (lex = 360 nm; lem = 500 nm). Chromium(III) is oxidized on-line to Cr with sodium metaperiodate and the Cr is subsequently treated with PTQA. Fluorescence due to the sum of Cr and Cr is measured and Cr is determined from the difference in fluorescence values. The effects of various analytical parameters, such as acidity, flow rate, sample volume, temperature, reagent concentration and interfering species, were studied. Kinetic studies using both the stopped-flow technique and the FIA procedure were utilized in order to study and optimise the oxidation conditions for Cr on the basis of its oxidation efficiency. The calibration graphs were rectilinear in the ranges 0.1–10 mg ml21 for Cr and 0.1–1.0 mg ml21 for Cr. The method was successfully verified by performing recovery experiments of Cr in several standard reference materials (peach leaves, sediments and tea), and it was applied to the speciation analysis of Cr–Cr in environmental waters (mineral, tap and distilled water), a food sample (tomato juice) and synthetic mixtures. Up to 30 samples per hour can be analyzed with a relative standard deviation of about 0.1–2%.

Specific extraction of chromium as tetrabutylammonium-chromate and spectrophotometric determination by diphenylcarbazide: speciation of chromium in effluent streams.

A very specific, selective, simple, and inexpensive procedure was developed for the speciation of CrVI and CrIII. This method is based on the quantitative extraction of chromate and CrIII (previously oxidized to CrVI) as a tetrabutylammonium-chromate ion-pair in methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), and then back extraction and preconcentration with an acidic diphenylcarbazide (DPC) solution. Back ext...

Processes affecting the remediation of chromium-contaminated sites.

The remediation of chromium-contaminated sites requires knowledge of the processes that control the migration and transformation of chromium. Advection, dispersion, and diffusion are physical processes affecting the rate at which contaminants can migrate in the subsurface. Heterogeneity is an important factor that affects the contribution of each of these mechanisms to the migration of chromium...

Chromium cycling in soils and water: links, gaps, and methods.

The major links in the cycling of chromium in soils and in natural waters are between chromium(III) and chromium (VI). Between the larger links are lesser links involving processes of mobilization and oxidation of CrIII and reduction of CrVI. The gaps are mainly in our understanding of the factors that control these processes. If soluble CrIII is added to an "average" soil, a portion of it will...

Biochar Application Effects on Soil Phosphorus Sorption and Release

We investigated the effects of chromate (CrVI) and phosphate (P) on their uptake and translocation in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata (PV). Plants were exposed to 1) 0.05 mM CrVI and 0, 0.05, 0.25 or 1.25 mM P or 2) 0.25 mM P and 0, 0.05, 0.25 or 1.25 mM CrVI for 24 h in hydroponics. PV accumulated 2,919 mg/kg Cr in the roots at CrVI0.05, and 5,100 and 3,500 mg/kg P in the fronds and roots a...

Kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of CrVI to CrIII by D-ribose and 2-deoxy-D-ribose

The oxidation of D-ribose and 2-deoxy-D-ribose by CrVI yields the aldonic acid and Cr3+ as final products when an excess of sugar over CrVI is used. The redox reaction occurs through CrVI→CrIII and CrVI→CrV→CrIII paths. The complete rate laws for the CrVI oxidation reactions are expressed by –d[CrVI]/dt = kH[H +]2 [ribose][CrVI], where kH = (5.9 ± 0.1) × 10–2 mol–3 dm9 s–1, and –d[CrVI]/dt = (k...
